Overview

Bloodborne Pathogens is designed for individuals who may be exposed to blood and body fluids, or items contaminated with blood, during the performance of their work and who wish to gain a more thorough understanding of bloodborne pathogens, the prevention of occupational exposure, and exposure follow-up.

Duration

Approximately 2 hours. Online course is self-paced. Participants may leave the course at any time and can resume where they left off. The duration will vary depending on the individual learner and their prior knowledge of the subject matter.

Who should take this Course?

This course is relevant for workers who may be exposed to blood and body fluids during the performance of their duties including, but not limited to healthcare professionals, emergency responders, public safety workers, laundry and housekeeping workers. This online bloodborne pathogens course is will get you CSA/CCOHS compliant, as it meets and/or exceeds the safety training and compliance standards set by Canada’s OHS & CSA regulatory bodies. The content of this course is applicable for all workplaces across Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, and the Northwest & Yukon Territories.

Course Developer

This online Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) - Worker Safety (CAN) course, content and certification is developed and owned by UL Workplace Health and Safety.

Completion Requirements

At the end of the online module participants must successfully complete the test. Participants that do not achieve 80% can review the module content up to 3 times, as necessary to advance and complete the course. Upon successful completion, there is a printable Certificate for your records.

Learning Outcomes

The purpose of this course is to provide participants with the basic ability to recognize the hazards associated with occupational exposure to blood and body fluids; be familiar with the steps to prevent exposure to bloodborne pathogens; and to know the steps that should be taken following exposure to blood and body fluids. Printed materials are avaialable online, through the elearning platform.

  • Correctly name the various types of bloodborne pathogens that can be transmitted
  • Correctly locate and navigate the Exposure Control Plan
  • Point out objects that could cause parenteral punctures, and explain how to correctly contain them
  • Demonstrate what to do in case of an exposure incident
  • Demonstrate how to properly recap needles
  • Identify engineering controls in your workplace
  • Identify the correct PPE to wear around potential exposure
  • Correctly examine PPE, and then demonstrate how to put it on
  • Correctly remove and dispose of PPE
  • Demonstrate what to do when you come in contact with blood and blood materials, and how to wash the exposure
  • Prepare the correct bleach solution for decontamination
  • Demonstrate how to properly clean a blood spill using the bleach solution
  • Properly clean any other contaminated surfaces
  • Identify different correct containers
  • Correctly perform containment procedures
  • Correctly identify labels for hazard containers
  • Correctly place labels on hazard materials containers
  • Demonstrate what steps to take to dispose of hazardous materials

Bloodborne Pathogens Course Preview

Once you have completed the registration process and activated the online Bloodborne Pathogens safety and awareness course in your elearning profile, you will be able to move through the individual modules at your own pace. You can start and stop as often as you like, and you can pick up where you left off later.

You will have three attempts to successfully complete the course modules and achieve a minimum score of 80% on the final test. If you are unsuccessful after the third attempt, you will be required to re-purchase the course and start over with three new attempts. As long as you pay attention to the videos, you should have no problem navigating the course and exam process.

Once you have successfully completed all the modules, you can access, download and print your Canadian Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Worker Safety certificate.
