Good Samaritan Act as it pertains to Professional Medical Responders in BC.
The Good Samaritan Act is in place to protect well intentioned bystanders from legal liability if they attempt to help someone in distress. The Act stipulates that you cannot be sued for attempting to help as a bystander, unless you are grossly negligent or do so with intent to gain financially from your actions.
It is important to note that the Good Samaritan Act does not apply to you while employed to provide emergency medical service. If you are working in the capacity of a First Responder or Emergency Medical Responder, you are not covered by the Good Samaritan Act. However, if you are not at work and happen to come across a situation while off-duty, you are covered by the Good Samaritan Act as a bystander.
