Hub & Spoke Model
Canadian Red Cross Instructor Recertification courses follow the most current (2020-2023) "Hub & Spoke" delivery model, which has been developed and implemented to more flexibly serve the needs of Instructors within the Canadian Red Cross First Aid Program Disciplines.
The universal 4-hour "Hub" Component of the Instructor Recertification program covers learner-centered principles that are relevant to all Canadian Red Cross Instructors, regardless of their specific certification levels or instructional disciplines.
By comparison, the individual 4-hour "Spoke" Components of Instructor Recertification are divided into three Program Disciplines. The Core Discipline Spoke, Professional Responder Discipline Spoke, and Wilderness Discipline Spoke place respective focus on the practices and audiences unique to each level of the corresponding Canadian Red Cross Instructor certifications.
Completion of the Instructor Recertification program includes mandatory participation in the universal Hub component and participation in at least one of the Spoke component sessions. Instructors renewing more than one Instructor certification will need to complete a separate, discipline specific Spoke session for each level of Instructor certification being renewed, but still only need to attend the Hub session. You can complete the Hub component any time within your 3-year instructor cycle, and complete the Spoke session(s) at the same time or individually, at different times throughout the cycle.
One Recertification
For example, an Instructor renewing just First Aid & CPR Instructor (Core) certification will need to participate in the 4-hour Hub component, and the 4-hour Core Discipline Spoke session. This adds up to a total of 8 hours of classroom session time, including both the Hub and Spoke component.
Two Recertifications
For example, an Instructor renewing both First Aid & CPR Instructor (Core) and Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (Professional Responder) certifications will need to participate in the 4-hour Hub component, and the 4-hour Core Discipline Spoke session, and the 4-hour Professional Responder Discipline Spoke session. This adds up to a total of 12 hours of classroom session time, including the Hub component and both Spoke components.
Three Recertifications
For example, an Instructor renewing First Aid & CPR Instructor (Core), and Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (Professional Responder), and Remote First Aid Instructor (Wilderness) certifications will need to participate in the 4-hour Hub component, and the 4-hour Core Discipline Spoke session, and the 4-hour Professional Responder Discipline Spoke session, and the 4-hour Wilderness Discipline Spoke session. This adds up to a total of 16 hours of classroom session time, including the Hub component and all three Spoke components.
Hub Component
The Canadian Red Cross Instructor Recertification Hub component consists of a review of fundamental learner-centered principles, as well as introduction to new educational technologies and new ways of utilizing your existing toolbox of instructional techniques.
Hub session participation is required and relevant for all Instructors recertifying within the Canadian Red Cross First Aid Programs, across all Disciplines including the Core Programs, the Professional Repsonder Programs the Wilderness Programs, and the Youth Leadership Programs. Hub sessions are a great opportunity to interact with other Canadian Red Cross Instructors and learn from each other's unique strengths, backgrounds, and experiences.
You only need to complete the Hub component once in every 3-year instructional cycle, and you may complete the corresponding Spoke session(s) in the same day, the next day, or even weeks/months apart. You do need to complete the Hub component prior to completing any of the Spoke components within your 3-year cycle.
Youth Leader Renewal
Completion of the Hub component only is all that's required to renew a Youth Leader certificate, but if you also hold other Instructor certifications you will still need to complete the appropriate Spoke session(s) as well.
Virtual Format
By request, the Canadian Red Cross Instructor Recertification Hub component can be delivered in a virtual video meeting format such as Zoom, Skype or Google Meet. Successful and meaningful participation in a virtual classroom session does require a desktop computer/laptop with high-speed internet connection capable of establishing and maintaining high resolution, 2-way audio-visual transmission through virtual meeting technology for the duration of each session. The virtual format also makes it necessary to start early for technical logistics and take more frequent breaks throughout each session, so the overall time to complete a Hub session through video meeting generally exceeds 4 hours in total.

Eligibility Requirements
Current Certification
In order to qualify for participation in an Instructor Recertification course, you must hold a current Canadian Red Cross Instructor certification at the level you are renewing. If your Instructor certificate has already expired, you will need to re-complete the intial Instructor Development Pathway if you wish to re-obtain that level of Instructor certification.
In extenuating circumstances you may be granted special permission to recertify within a "Grace Period", as determined by the Canadian Red Cross. Keep in mind that the Canadian Red Cross reviews each request for a Grace Period individually and makes decisions on a case-by-case basis, so it is not an automatic or guaranteed safeguard.
Teaching Records
You must also be able to provide proof that you have taught the minimum amount and type of courses as required for each of your specific Instructor Certification levels. The baseline expectation for all Instructor Recertifications is that you must have taught at least 3 course in the past 3 years. At least one of the courses you've taught must correlate with the Instructor Discipline to which your Instructor certification belongs. The chart below outlines the minimum teaching requirements for recertification eligibility in each specific Canadian Red Cross First Aid Programs Instructor level.
Minimum Teaching Requirements
Instructor Certification |
Recertification Eligiblity |
Core First Aid | Taught at least 3 courses |
CPRI | ...including at least one CPR level C course. |
FAI | ...including at least one Standard First Aid course. |
Professional Responder | Taught at least 3 courses |
BLSI | ...including at least one BLS course. |
FRI | ...including at least one First Responder course. |
EMRI | ...including at least one EMR course. |
Wilderness | Taught at least 3 courses |
RFAI | ...including at least one Remote First Aid course. |
WFAI | ...including at least one Wilderness First Aid course. |
WFRI | ...including at least one Wilderness First Responder course. |
Note that although you must meet the Minimum Teaching Requirements for each Instructor Certification that you wish to renew, the 3-course minimum is a "total" within the past 3 years, not "per-instructor-certification". It is possible to meet the minimum teaching requirements for up to 3 separate Instructor certifications, in 3 separate Disciplines, with only 3 courses taught in total as long as those courses are of the required type for each Discipline.
How to Access & Submit Teaching Records
Whenever you teach a Canadian Red Cross First Aid Programs course, whether it is part of the Core Discipline, Professional Responder Discipline, Wilderness Discipline, or Youth Leadership Discipline, the Training Partner for whom you are teaching will add your name to a specific course roster as the designated Instructor for that course.
Every course roster within the MyRC system that has your name attached as the Instructor will show up in the "My Teaching Records" section of your personal MyRC Profile. This applies to all the Canadian Red Cross courses you teach, even if you work for more than one Training Partner, as long as the courses have been properly documented and processed through the MyRC platform.
You can share those teaching records directly through your personal MyRC Profile, with a Canadian Red Cross Instructor Development Center (IDC) for purposes of providing proof of minimum teaching requirements whenever you wish.
- Login to your active MyRC Profile
- Select/hover the cursor over "My Profile"
- Then select "My Teaching Records" from the corresponding drop-down menu
- Click the "Select Province" menu
- Select your Province of choice from the corresponding dropdown options
(this will usually be the Province in which you taught most of your courses) - Click the "Select IDC" menu
- Select the Instructor Development Center hosting your Recertification course from the corresponding dropdown options
- Click the button
At this point, whichever IDC you selected should automatically receive an email from the MyRC system with a spreadsheet summary of all the courses you've taught in the last 3 years. If your MyRC Profile is not sending the teaching records correctly, or if your teaching records are missing courses which you've taught, you may need to contact your Training Partner, Program Representative, or the Canadian Red Cross Contact Center for technical support.
