Instructor Recertification Course Summary
Instructor Disciplines |
Eligibility Requirements |
Teaching Records |
Completion of the Instructor Recertification program includes participation in at least one of the Discipline Specific Instructor Recertification course sessions. Instructors renewing more than one Instructor certification will need to complete a separate Discipline Specific Instructor Recertification session for each level of Instructor certification being renewed.
You can complete any Discipline Specific Instructor Recertification course session any time within your 3-year instructor cycle. You can complete separate Discipline Specific Instructor Recertification courses at different times throughout each 3-year Instructor certification cycle. However it is recommended to complete all your Instructor Recertifications back-to-back within a few days of each other, to keep your Instructor Recertification cycle as simple and easy to keep track of as possible.
Recertification in One Instructor Discipline
For example, an Instructor renewing just First Aid & CPR Instructor (Core) certification will need to participate in a First Aid & CPR Instructor (FAI) Recertification course.
Recertification in Two Instructor Disciplines
For example, an Instructor renewing both First Aid & CPR Instructor (Core) and Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (Professional Responder) certifications will need to participate in a First Aid & CPR Instructor (FAI) Recertification course and an Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (EMRI) Recertification course.
Recertification in Three Instructor Disciplines
For example, an Instructor renewing First Aid & CPR Instructor (Core), and Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (Professional Responder), and Wilderness First Aid Instructor (Wilderness) certifications will need to participate in a First Aid & CPR Instructor (FAI) Instructor Recertification course and an Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (EMRI) Recertification course and a Wilderness First Aid Instructor (WFAI) Recertification course.

The Canadian Red Cross Instructor Recertification pathway is divided into three distinct First Aid Program Disciplines consisting of "Core", "Professional Responder" and "Wilderness/Remote". You only need to attend and participate in the Discipline Specific Instructor Recertification course sessions that are relevant to your specific Instructor certification levels.
Each Discipline Specific Instructor Recertification course session covers instructional content, principles and practices that are specifically relevant to the Instructor certifications included within each respective Canadian Red Cross First Aid Program Discipline.
Core Discipline Instructor Recertification Courses
A Core Program Discipline Recertification course is required if you are Recertifying at the CPR Instructor (CPRI) level, or the First Aid & CPR Instructor (FAI) level. You will cover content, skills, principles and materials that are specific to teaching the Canadian Red Cross Core First Aid Programs, including Standard First Aid, Standard Child Care First Aid, Emergency First Aid, Emergency Child Care First Aid, Marine Basic First Aid, CPR level C, and CPR level A.
Professional Responder Discipline Instructor Recertification Courses
A Professional Responder Discipline Recertification course is required if you are Recertifying at the Basic Life Support Instructor (BLSI) level, the First Responder Instructor (FRI) level, the Emergency Medical Responder Instructor (EMRI) level or the Advanced First Aid Instructor (AFAI) level. You will cover content, skills, principles and materials that are specific to teaching the Canadian Red Cross Professional Responder Programs, including Emergency Medical Responder, Advanced First Aid, First Responder, Marine Advanced First Aid, Basic Life Support, Airway Management and Oxygen Therapy.
Wilderness & Remote Discipline Instructor Recertification Courses
A Wilderness & Remote Discipline Recertification course is required if you are Recertifying at the Remote First Aid Instructor (RFI) level, the Wilderness First Aid Instructor (WFAI) level, or the Wilderness First Responder Instructor (WFRI) level. You will cover content, skills, principles and materials that are specific to teaching the Canadian Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid Programs, including Remote First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, and Wilderness First Responder.

Current Instructor Certification
In order to qualify for participation in an Instructor Recertification course, you must hold a current Canadian Red Cross Instructor certification at the level you are renewing. If your Instructor certificate has already expired, you will need to re-complete the intial Instructor Development Pathway if you wish to re-obtain that level of Instructor certification.
In extenuating circumstances the Canadian Red Cross may grant you special permission to recertify within a "Grace Period", as negotiated with and determined by the Canadian Red Cross directly. Keep in mind that the Canadian Red Cross reviews each request for a Grace Period individually and makes decisions on a case-by-case basis, so it is not an automatic or guaranteed safeguard.
Teaching Records
You must also be able to provide proof that you have taught the minimum amount and type of courses as required for each of your specific Instructor Certification levels. The baseline expectation for all Instructor Recertifications is that you must have taught at least 3 course in the past 3 years. At least one of the courses you've taught must correlate with the Instructor Discipline to which your Instructor certification belongs. The chart below outlines the minimum teaching requirements for recertification eligibility in each specific Canadian Red Cross First Aid Programs Instructor level.
Minimum Teaching Requirements
Instructor Certification |
Recertification Eligiblity |
CPRI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one CPR level C course. |
FAI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one Standard First Aid course. |
BLSI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one BLS course. |
FRI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one First Responder course. |
AFAI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one Advanced First Aid course. |
EMRI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one EMR course. |
RFAI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one Remote First Aid course. |
WFAI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one Wilderness First Aid course. |
WFRI | Taught a minimum of 3 courses in the past 3 years...including at least one Wilderness First Responder course. |
Note that although you must meet the Minimum Teaching Requirements for each Instructor Certification that you wish to renew, the 3-course minimum is a "total" within the past 3 years, not "per-instructor-certification". It is possible to meet the minimum teaching requirements for up to 3 separate Instructor certifications, in 3 separate Disciplines, with only 3 courses taught in total as long as those courses are of the required type for each Discipline.
How to Access & Submit Teaching Records
Whenever you teach a Canadian Red Cross First Aid Programs course, whether it is part of the Core Discipline, Professional Responder Discipline, or Wilderness Discipline the Training Partner for whom you are teaching will add your name to a specific course roster as the designated Instructor for that course.
Every course roster within the MyRC system that has your name attached as the Instructor will show up in the "My Teaching Records" section of your personal MyRC Profile. This applies to all the Canadian Red Cross courses you teach, even if you work for more than one Training Partner, as long as those Training Partners have been properly documenting the courses and processing them through the MyRC platform. You can share those teaching records directly through your personal MyRC Profile, with a Canadian Red Cross Instructor-Trainer, for purposes of providing proof of minimum teaching requirements whenever you wish.
- Login to your active MyRC Profile
- Select/hover the cursor over "My Profile"
- Then select "My Teaching Records" from the corresponding drop-down menu.
- You may need to sort by date in the "Start Date" column to show the most recent courses first.
- You may need to increase the number of courses displayed by adjusting the "Show entries" box.
- Once you have the required number and type of courses displayed on the page, you can save the information in a sharable file format.
- On most browsers you can simultaneously click "Ctrl P" on your keyboard to "Print Screen" then select "Save as PDF" from the printer options.
- On mobile devices you may need to use a screen capture process/app to save the information in a sharable file format.
If courses that you've taught are not showing up in your teaching records you may need to contact your Training Partner, Program Representative, or the Canadian Red Cross Contact Center for technical support. (myrcsupport@redcross.ca)
