Naloxone Administration Quick Reference Guide
Naloxone (Narcan) Administration Guide for Emergency Medical Responders in BC.
As an Emergency Medical Responder licensed through EMALB in British Columbia, one of the medications that you are authorized to administer is Naloxone (also known as Narcan).
The administration of Naloxone to a patient who is experiencing an opioid overdose can temporarily disrupt the effects of the opioid and allow the patient to start breathing normally.
Fentanyl is one of the most common opioids that causes overdose in British Columbia right now, but any opioid can create life-threatening problems if abused/overused.
Naloxone does not get rid of the opioid from the patient's system, it just temporarily blocks the effects of the opioid so urgent transport to more advanced care is always recommended.
