Professional Responder
Drug Profiles
Canadian Red Cross First Responders are trained to assist with a patient's medication, while Canadian Red Cross Emergency Medical Responders are trained to actually administer certain medications to their patients. The difference between assisting and administering can be a fine line, but either way it's important for Professional Responders to have a basic understanding of some of the drugs/medications commonly utilized during medical emergencies.
Although the Canadian Red Cross Emergency Care for Professional Responders reference manual has an entire chapter dedicated to pharmacology, the specific doseages and guidelines for administering medications are very regionally specific and subject to frequent updates. For that reason, the specific drug profiles are contained in a separate downloadable PDF, which can be updated whenever necessary.
The drugs and medications listed in the current Drug Profiles document include...
- Entonox (Nitrous Oxide)
- Nitroglycerine (NTG)
- Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA)
- Naloxone (Narcan)
- Salbutamol (Ventolin)
- Epinephrine (EpiPen)
